Matt Vehovec, a junior at Mentor High School, packed glue sticks, notebooks and pencils in a plastic bag for the upcoming school year.

The school supplies weren't for the 16-year-old's backpack but for disadvantaged students in Lake County.

Matt, along with other volunteers, is working hard this week at Salvation Army Gym in Painesville for the School Supplies for Kids project.

The project is overseen by 34 high school juniors from the Leadership Lake County program and is intended to help needy families receive school supplies for their children.

The students collected more than $11,000 — an increase from last year's drive.  Read more...

The slogan "Kids helping kids" rang true at the Salvation Army Gym in Painesville this week.

School supplies, such as glue sticks, notebooks and pens, were scattered around the gym for the School Supplies for Kids project overseen by the Leadership Lake County Youth program. The program teams up with other organizations to help disadvantaged students in the area get their supplies before school begins. Read more….

Leadership Lake County partnered with Lakeland Community College and Crossroads to host the Second Annual Lake County Youth Summit on January 9th. LLC Class of 2009 members, Alex Jewell, Courtney Ou, Alyssa Amyot and Kaia Trubianno helped facilitate afternoon youth centered breakout sessions. This summer The Leadership Lake County Youth Program, in collaboration with the Salvation Army, provided nearly 2,000 students with school supplies. Their efforts were highlighted in an article published in the News-Herald.
